Obituary:
Maxine Jewell (Hall) Helterbrand, 92 of Springfield, MO and formerly of Cabool, MO passed away on Sunday, February 16, 2014. She was born in Blue Mound, KS the third daughter of Rev. Daniel Elvie and Minnie Fay (Miller) Hall. The family lived in Blue Mound, Waverly and Baxter Springs, Ks and moved to Pleasant Hill, MO in 1932 and then to Houston, MO in 1934. Maxine graduated from Houston High School in 1939, ranking fourth in a class of 85.
Maxine graduated in 1943 with an Associate Degree from South west Baptist College in Bolivar, then a two year college. After working in the Bank of Houston for a year, she married Gayle M. Helterbrand of Cabool. They attended Oklahoma Baptist University at Shawnee, then attended Eastern New Mexico College of Portales, New Mexico where Maxine received her Business degree in 1947. After a year in Tucson, Arizona, they moved back to Cabool, where they lived until Gayle’s death in 2012. Maxine since resided in Springfield to be near her daughter and grandson.
Gayle and Maxine adopted their beloved baby daughter, Deanna, through Missouri Baptist Children’s Home. Maxine was also especially proud of her beloved grandson, Dustin Scott. She was a loving, supportive wife, mother and grandmother.
Maxine was employed as a legal secretary for attorney Robert Lamar for several years. She was subsequently employed by Cabool Schools for over twenty years: first, as a secretary to the Superintendent, 1961 until 1980, then as a teacher assistant until her retirement in 1983. After retirement, she and Gayle enjoyed their many travels and adventures.
Maxine was an active long-time member of the First Baptist Church of Cabool. She was very musically talented, played various musical instruments and served as choir director for several years. She also taught private piano lessons for a period of time in her home.
Maxine was preceded in death by her husband of 68 years, Gayle; her parents, D.E. and Minnie Hall and two sisters, Flora Roberts and Beulah Wilhoit. She is survived by her daughter, Deanna Scott and grandson, Dustin Scott both of Springfield, MO; several cousins, other relatives and many wonderful friends. She will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her.
